TROUBLESHOOTING

Transmission Slipping or Shifting Rough? What It Means

A transmission that slips, hesitates, shifts hard, or delays before engaging is telling you something is off, and it's worth addressing before it turns into a bigger repair.

If the transmission won't engage at all, slips severely, or you notice a burning smell, stop driving and have it towed rather than risking further damage.

Quick checks you can do safely

Check the transmission fluid level and condition if your vehicle has a dipstick for it — many newer vehicles don't, so check your owner's manual.
Note when it happens: only on a cold start, only under acceleration, or only at certain speeds.
Pay attention to any burning smell, which can point to overheating transmission fluid.

What's usually behind it

Low or degraded transmission fluid
Worn clutch packs or bands (automatic) or a worn clutch (manual)
A failing solenoid or sensor
A software issue affecting shift points

QUESTIONS

Transmission Slipping or Shifting Rough: common questions

Can a fluid change fix slipping?

Sometimes, if it's caught early and the fluid is simply old or low. Once internal wear has started, a fluid change alone usually isn't enough, so we diagnose before recommending anything.

Is transmission repair always expensive?

It depends entirely on the cause. We'll explain exactly what we find and what the options are before doing any work.
