TROUBLESHOOTING

AC Blowing Warm Air? What to Check First

When the AC blows warm air, the cause is often low refrigerant from a leak, but it can also be a failing compressor, an electrical problem, or a clogged filter.

Quick checks you can do safely

Make sure the AC is on, set to cold, and the fan is running at a medium to high setting.
Check the cabin air filter. A clogged filter reduces airflow, and it's often easy to replace. Your owner's manual shows where it is.
Listen when the AC switches on. A clicking that starts and stops can point to low refrigerant or a clutch problem.

What's usually behind it

A failing compressor or compressor clutch

QUESTIONS

AC Blowing Warm Air: common questions

Can I just add refrigerant myself?

Recharge cans can hide a leak, and overcharging the system can cause more damage. We recommend testing the system first, so you add refrigerant only if it's actually needed.

Can I get help paying for AC repair?

Possibly. The California Cool Air Rebate program can cover up to 90% of qualifying AC repair costs for eligible residents with certain older vehicles. We're a participating shop, so ask us whether you qualify.
